Chinese Chippendale Settee

Eighteenth-century England fell for the latticework it saw on Chinese export screens, and Thomas Chippendale lent the fashion his name. That crisp geometry is at its most graphic on a settee, where a broad back lets the pattern read clearly against hedging or a painted wall. Five feet wide, this one seats two in comfort and anchors a loggia or pool terrace with real presence. Try it against a backdrop of bamboo or tall bird-of-paradise, with blue-and-white planters of clipped boxwood at either end. In Chinese red it is pure chinoiserie; in white it has the cool, breezy confidence of a Palm Beach garden room.
