A garden bench should be long enough to share and handsome enough to stand alone when nobody is sitting on it. The Cambridge Garden Bench, from O'Brien Ironworks' Gothic Revival collection, manages both: six feet wide, with a seat seventy inches long and a back rising to forty-five inches, it has the presence of a church pew set out among the borders. Place it at the end of a long walk lined with boxwood, or beneath a rose arbour where the scent is thickest on a still June evening. In white it gleams against dark yew; in hunter green it seems grown from the hedge itself.
