Bronze Putto on Fish Shell Fountain

At the end of a long gravel allee, framed by clipped box and the dark spires of cypress, a cherubic putto balances atop an ornate fish and shell, water falling around him in a bright, unhurried curtain. The sound is soft and continuous, the kind that makes you slow your steps and lower your voice. Put out a hand and the spray is cool on your skin, the bronze scales and shell slick and smooth beneath it. The evening air smells of warm stone and box hedging, and the whole garden takes on the calm of an Italian villa.

The fountain is cast in bronze by the traditional lost-wax method, with lifelike cherub proportions and intricate marine detail in the fish and shell base. Its hand-applied patina, in brown or green, is made for outdoor life, and the piece is at its best in a formal garden, an estate courtyard or beside a pool.
