Rome Planter

Some pots look as though they have spent a century at the bottom of an Italian garden, and this one has the knack without the wait. Its cement body swells into a generous belly before drawing in at the rim, and the surface is pitted and softened like old travertine, with a taupe wash settling into every hollow so the whole pot reads pale and chalky in full sun. Plant it with a clipped boxwood ball or a froth of lavender and set it at the bend of a gravel path, where its rough skin grows warm under the hand by mid-afternoon.
