Afternoon tea in the garden asks for very little: a pot of Darjeeling, a plate of shortbread, and a small table near enough to the roses that you can hear the bees working them. This square base carries the Greek key's interlocking meander, its angles throwing a neat lattice of shadow onto the flagstones as the light moves round. Crown it with glass to let the pattern show through, or with a slab of honed stone for a cooler, quieter surface, and set it between a pair of chairs on the terrace or in the dappled shade of a crape myrtle.
