Directoire Armchair

Tall-backed and composed, the Directoire armchair has the bearing of something found in the orangery of an old country house, where lemon trees overwinter in wooden boxes and the floor stays cool underfoot. Standing 44 inches high, it gives a strong vertical line at the head of a dining table, or in a pair either side of a garden door. Choose aluminium for a wet or salt-air garden, or traditional iron, then one of 15 hand-applied colours. Set it near clipped topiary and a stone trough of thyme, and the scene feels quietly, confidently formal.
