The camelback is a Georgian silhouette, a gentle rise at the centre of the back that softens an otherwise formal line. Rendered here in Chinese Chippendale fretwork, it gives this six-foot bench the look of something that might have stood for generations at the end of a long allée. Set it against dark yew or a wall of espaliered camellias, where the lattice will read clearly, and let a sweep of lavender or salvia hum with bees at its feet. It is grand enough for a formal parterre, yet relaxed enough for a front porch.
