Centurion Curule Garden Bench
Centurion Curule Garden Bench

The curule seat, with its crossed legs, was the chair of Roman magistrates, and it has never quite lost its air of authority. Stretched here into a garden bench more than six feet long, the form takes on a stately calm. Set it at the end of a gravel walk lined with clipped yew or boxwood, where the eye naturally comes to rest, or against a sun-warmed wall beneath espaliered pears. In faux verdigris it looks as though it has stood in the garden for generations; in black it draws a crisp line against the soft froth of lady's mantle and catmint.
