Arita Garden Stool

The Arita stool has the stillness of a river stone. A flat round top sits on a full, swelling base, an hourglass in profile, and the charcoal glaze has a muted, almost mineral finish, closer to basalt than to anything shiny. It suits the restraint of a Japanese-inspired garden: raked gravel, a clump of black mondo grass, a Japanese maple turning scarlet in autumn. In a Florida garden it is just as much at home beside a cycad or a pot of dark-leaved alocasia on a shaded patio, where its deep tone grounds the planting.
